Post-Harvest Processing Good Practices Training in Laos

November 15, 2022

As part of the USDA-funded CLEAN Project, implemented by Winrock International, Q Processing Instructor Johan Kwe traveled to Pakse, Laos to deliver a training on Post-Harvest Processing Good Practices at the Agricultural Research Centre of Southern Laos.

Designed to establish good processing practices for learners actively working in coffee processing, the 24 students in attendance received a detailed step-by-step training on how to produce specialty-grade fully washed coffee – including training on the application of proper fermentation techniques, the usage of post-harvest processing tools and instruments, the benefit of pre-cleaning and fermentation, and the risks involved in each post-harvest processing method. They also learned about inoculation techniques using Lalcafe™ yeasts and aspergillus oryzae spores on washed and natural processes. Common issues and points of quality loss were addressed with a goal of using post-harvest processing good practices to improve quality – thus increasing the value of their coffee.

Attendees were thrilled with the amount of information and knowledge gained throughout the duration of the course.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Department of Agriculture, and the Lao Coffee Association. To read more about CQI’s work in Laos, click here.
